Thinking about fostering a pet? Here’s what you need to know!

Pets are wonderful family members who make our lives more bearable and give us unconditional love. The majority of the people who think about adopting pet animals have little to no experience with having one. They just want a companion. Or maybe they truly believe that pet ownership is all about doing it alone. Either way, how do you get them? How do you bring them into your world without the pressure and worry of raising someone new? While some people are lucky enough to have access to a local shelter, other locations may take an animal in as well.

The most common scenario is adoption. But can you adopt a pet from an unknown location? There are thousands of dogs and cats currently at shelters across Texas. If you have a favorite pet or you're considering adopting one, there are thousands of these at different shelters in Texas. With such a wide variety of options, where do you start? Houston Pets Alive!

Houston Pets Alive is an amazing rescue. They have programs to save animals that are at risk of euthanasia. They like to get the pets out of shelters where they can be euthanized. This is a friendly organization that you need to contact for your next pet. On their website, you can find images of available animals to choose from. First, find the right cat or dog, then fill out the foster application, and then set up a meeting. If you like the animal, then sign and pay a small contract fee of $85. This fee covers spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, dewormer, and microchip. Now you are ready to take your new pet home. This organization supplies pet stores and with their assistance, you can start your pet store as well. Find a pet for fostering here: https://www.houstonpetsalive.org/

To adopt a dog, you pay a fee of $200 and $275 for puppies. This includes spay/neuter, shots, microchip, dewormer, and 1-month heartworm & flea prevention. For cats, it is $50 and $75-100 for kittens. This fee includes spay/neuter, shots, combo test, deworming, and 1-month flea prevention. Puppies can only be adopted by those living in the Houston vicinity. Visit their website here: http://www.k-9angelsrescue.org/

Houston Animal Shelters

Houston Animal Shelters are known for being among the largest groups of public agencies dedicated to saving dogs and cats and other animals from euthanasia. However, some shelters do not include dogs and cats. Take note of that because they offer a range of specific programs and offerings that are unique to individual cities and states. While shelters are great, they can become unaffordable for individuals and families as well. So, they are something to consider before making decisions regarding your pet.

The Association for Humane Welfare (AHW) operates two shelters in Houston and San Antonio that offer pet-care services. Though one does not require a license for adoption, AHW recognizes that there are different rules in every state and city. Another important thing to note about AHW pet shelters is that the funding tends to be more toward rescue pets and is less toward adopted pets. Many shelters also have educational programs.
